The City of Lake Forest, California, formerly known as El Toro (The Bull), was settled as a cattle ranch (Rancho de Las Alisos, or Valley of the Sycamores) by Don Jose Serrano; through a Mexican land grant in 1846. The area became affectionately known as El Toro for bulls that roamed the Serrano’s family ranch for more than a century. Eventually sold to private interests, the city would be “master-planned,” by developing powerhouse Occidental Petroleum in the 1960s. A resulting bustling community arose – complete with two synthetic lakes (Lake I – Hidden Lakes, and Lake II – Sun and Sail Club) as the perfect complement to the overabundance of Sycamore trees. Incorporated since 1991, the City of Lake Forest is home to some of southern Orange County’s finest real estate hosting both communities of Portola Hills and Foothill Ranch.
